What’s New Wednesday 6-28-17: News & Resources for Educators & Solutionaries

Each week find a round-up of selected resources, news stories, and commentary related to humane living, global ethical issues, and positive solutions.

Here’s some news to know for this week:

  • Via NPR: Report looks at why men harass women on the streets
    A new report found that many men around the world harass women on the street. Motivations range from boredom and entertainment to frustrations with their lives and a need to feel powerful.
  • Via NY Times: Yellowstone grizzlies losing endangered species protections
    After 42 years on the endangered species list, the Yellowstone grizzly bear, with numbers now exceeding 700, will lose its protected status.
  • Via KPCC: A school’s diversity affects student well-being, levels of bullying
    “A study by University of California Los Angeles researchers published in the journal Child Development on Tuesday finds that students who attend more racially- and ethnically-diverse schools report less vulnerability, loneliness, insecurity and bullying.”
  • Via Bloomberg: US ranks in “second tier” of Social Progress Index
    An annual survey that ranks countries on 50 different metrics of social progress has ranked the US at 18th overall. The US ranks well for higher education, but in areas such as health, environmental protection, and “tolerance and inclusion,” its rank is well below what experts would expect for such a wealthy country.
  • Via Common Dreams: Deadly heatwaves could affect 75% of humans by 2100
    Reports show an increase in the frequency and intensity of deadly heatwaves around the world. A new report notes that by 2100, more than three-quarters of humanity could be threatened by “potentially killer heat.”
  • Via LiveScience: AMA calls for healthier, plant-based foods in hospitals
    At their recent annual meeting, the American Medical Association House of Delegates released a policy statement calling for more healthy, plant-based foods, healthier drinks, and fewer “cancer-causing” and unhealthy foods.
  • Via Global Citizen: ICE agents have begun targeting victims of human trafficking
    Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have begun arresting undocumented immigrants in New York City – and elsewhere — who are victims of human trafficking, citing courthouses as not qualifying as “sensitive” spaces.
  • Via Prague Morning: Czech Republic to ban fur farms
    The Czech Republic is passing legislation to ban fur farming by 2019. Currently 20,000 foxes and minks are held on farms in that country. The Czech Republic will join 12 other EU countries that have passed similar bans.
