5 Minute Changemaker: Pledge to “Skip the Slip”

Whether we’re at a restaurant, the grocery, or even the library, nearly every time we engage in a transaction, we’re given a printed receipt.

While a paper slip seems like a little thing (like a plastic straw), in the US alone, more than “250 million gallons of oil, nearly 10 million trees, and 1 billion gallons of water are consumed each year in the creation of paper receipts, generating 1.5 billion pounds of waste.“

And today, most paper receipts are thermal paper, which means they often include BPA (strongly suspected to contribute to health problems) and are not recyclable.

Green America has launched a “Skip the Slip” campaign to bring attention to the harmful impacts of paper receipts, to encourage everyone who can to refuse paper receipts, and to encourage businesses to use alternatives.

They also have suggestions for those concerned about not having paper receipts.

So try skipping the slip whenever you can, encouraging businesses to provide alternatives (like e-receipts), and sharing this tip with others as another small way we can make a positive difference.

Be sure to forward this to at least ONE person who would benefit from this resource.
