Here’s some news to know for this week:
- Via The Guardian: Hundreds of casualties in Mogadishu truck bombing
On Saturday (10/14) at least 300 people were killed and hundreds more injured in a truck bombing that hit the center of Mogadishu, Somalia. The truck was full of military-grade and homemade explosives, and unfortunately, exploded near a fuel tanker, “creating a massive fireball.” Al-Shabaab is suspected but has not yet claimed responsibility. - Via Global Citizen: California becomes first US state to legally recognize nonbinary gender
The Gender Recognition Act allows residents to identify as nonbinary on “state issued documentation of gender identity.” The Act also will “eliminate laws requiring an in-person court appearance or statement from a doctor on behalf of individuals seeking changes to their legal gender status.” - Via The Guardian: Only two penguin chicks survive in colony of 40,000
A colony of Adelie penguins in Antarctica has lost all but two chicks this year. The rest died of starvation. “It is the second time in just four years that such devastation – not previously seen in more than 50 years of observation – has been wrought on the population.” - Via CNN: Gucci to go fur-free in 2018
Luxury fashion powerhouse Gucci has announced that the company will go fur-free in their collections, implementing a policy in which they will not use “mink, coyote, raccoon dog, fox or any other animal bred or caught for their fur.” - Via NY Times: Services like Uber may be hurting public transit, biking
Researchers from UC Davis in the US surveyed 2,000 people in seven major cities and discovered a tendency that “ride-hailing draws people away from public transit” and also tends to decrease trips by bike. Researchers say this pattern could make traffic worse. - Via Wired: Wildfires are becoming a public health crisis
As wildfires increase in number and severity, dangerous levels of smoke and ash are polluting urban areas, causing significant health problems and challenges. - Via Metro: An animal-free “aquarium” exhibit has opened in NYC
National Geographic has launched its Encounter: Ocean Odyssey interactive digital exhibit in Times Square. Attendees can learn about and interact with virtual ocean animals and habitats. A percentage of ticket sales go to help NatGeo’s conservation mission. - Via NY Times: California is first state to ban sales of dogs, cats, and rabbits in stores
Designed to decrease puppy mills, kitten factories, and other practices that mass produce animals for sale, California has passed a law requiring that dogs, cats, and rabbits sold in stores come from shelters and rescue centers. People will still be able to buy from private breeders.
